Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is hunting for the next generation of Olympic stars. He kicked off his talent search at the inaugural Samiran Bordoloi Memorial Inter Club Swimming Competition in Dibrugarh, Assam. The event took place at the city’s brand new swimming pool stadium.
Sonowal credits Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a massive shift in the nation’s sports culture over the last 12 years. He noted that recent wins by Indian athletes on the world stage have sparked interest among local youth. "Consequently, athletes have succeeded in delivering outstanding performances on major international stages, which in turn has significantly inspired the new generation," Sonowal said.
The government is currently identifying prospects for the 2036 Olympic Games. "I believe that preparations are already underway to groom our young athletes so that they can participate in the 2036 Olympics, which India is set to host," the minister stated. India also has its sights locked on the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
Gujarat officials have already taken the reins for that event. After the 2026 Games conclude in Glasgow, the Commonwealth Games Federation flag moved to Gujarat. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi accepted the flag before handing it over to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during a recent cabinet session. The state plans to use the flag to promote the Fit India movement and rally young athletes until the 2030 opening ceremonies.
