Guwahati: Lisha Das is heading to Scotland. The 16-year-old para cyclist from Assam just became the first para-athlete from her state to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. She will compete in the para track cycling event at the XXIII Games in Glasgow, scheduled for July 23 to August 2, 2026. At only 16, she is the youngest member of the 124-person Indian squad.

A Class XI student at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Biswanath, Das was born on June 8, 2010. She is a native of Tezpur and the daughter of Nirmal Das and Rukmini Bhumij Das. Despite competing with only one arm, she has dominated the circuit. Her resume includes gold at the 2025 National Para Road Cycling Championship, two golds at the Lanna Cup, bronze at the Korat Cup, and five total medals at the 2026 Asian Para Track Championships.

Her school held a special event to celebrate her selection. International athlete Hridainanda Das praised the achievement during the ceremony. "Lisha is the first athlete from Biswanath to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. It is a matter of immense pride for the entire region. We wish her every success and hope she returns with a medal," he said.

The Paralympic Association of Assam says this milestone will spark interest in para sports. Das joins fellow Assam athletes including Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and lawn bowls players Nayan Moni Saikia and Putul Sonowal on the national team. India will compete in multiple categories, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, gymnastics, swimming, and five para-sports.
