Agartala: Tripura lawmakers paused their session on August 28 to recognize Asmita Dey. The Assembly speaker, Rampada Jamatia, moved a motion honoring her historic gold medal win at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. She is the first Indian judoka to claim the top prize at these games.
Dey grabbed the win on July 31. She faced a Canadian opponent in the women’s 48kg final. A Golden Score victory secured her the gold. The House cheered the result as a point of pride for both the state and the nation. They credited her win to raw grit and discipline.
Born on March 22, 2003, Dey hails from South Sonaichhari, a remote village in the Belonia subdivision. She is the youngest daughter of Munni Patari Dey and the late Arjun Dey. Lawmakers also recognized the support from her family and coaches. The motion stated, "Tripura Legislative Assembly extends its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Golden Girl Asmita Dey."
She is already back to work. She is currently training hard for the Asian Games in Japan. The event starts this September. Officials hope her climb from a rural village to an international podium will spark a new wave of interest in sports among local youth.
