Guwahati: The Anundoram Borooah Academy in Pathsala, Bajali, marked Teacher’s Day by handing out the first Zubeen Garg Awards. This new prize honors the late singer and musician. It recognizes students who hit the top marks in their respective exams.
Jyotirmoy Das claimed the prize for his top performance in the High School Leaving Certificate exam. Arhi Rajkhowa took home the award for leading the CBSE rankings. Each student walked away with a gamosa, a memento, a certificate, and Rs 50,000 cash. Garima Saikia Garg, wife of the late singer, handed over the prizes. She urged local youth to keep his creative flame alive.
Justice remains a priority. During the event, Garima Saikia Garg pushed for a fair probe into her husband’s death. "If Zubeen does not get justice, I think there will be no meaning to justice in Assam," she told reporters. She also asked for quick, quality work on the Zubeen Khetra construction project.
Ranjit Deka, who serves as Rector, Principal, and Managing Director, led the proceedings. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu later visited the campus to meet staff and students. He argued that schools must focus on social responsibility alongside raw academic skill. Bajali Deputy Commissioner Madhumita Bhagawati and social worker Julie Deka Baruah also attended.
The academy expanded its tributes throughout the day. Former students from the 2011 to 2013 batch created an award for the late English teacher Dhruvajyoti Bhattacharya. Ranjit Deka gave this prize to Ananya Thakuria for her high marks in English during the Higher Secondary final exam.
The morning started with rituals. Amulya Kalita lit a ceremonial lamp. Principals and staff paid floral tributes to Anundoram Borooah, S. Radhakrishnan, Zubeen Garg, and Bhupen Hazarika. A freshers welcome event rounded out the day.
