Priyanka Chaturvedi Targets Election Commission Over Electoral Roll Revision

Shillong: Shiv Sena-UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi blasted the Election Commission on Friday for staying silent. She wants answers about internal complaints regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The commission has not held a press conference or answered questions since issuing its initial press note. Chaturvedi claims the pressure started from inside the institution.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar reportedly faced heat from two fellow Election Commissioners. They questioned the Special Intensive Revision process, specifically regarding additions and deletions in electoral rolls and the handling of Forms 6 and 7. Reports indicate the Cabinet Secretary forwarded letters from these commissioners to the Law Minister. Chaturvedi noted, "A change of government is a process in every democracy. One party is in power today, and another may come to power at a different time. However, this depends on the functioning of a robust Election Commission."

She warned the BJP that their current tactics against the opposition might eventually backfire. The opposition did not start this fire. The concerns originated within the commission itself, where members reportedly met with the Cabinet Secretary. Chaturvedi emphasized that regime changes must come from the ballot box, not from manipulating voter lists. She rejected comparisons to recent political unrest in Bangladesh.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla promised to handle any impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar by the book. Chaturvedi cited the case of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma as a standard for parliamentary procedure. She remains firm on one point. Governments should only fall through the vote of the masses.
