Agartala: Tripura Congress workers take to the streets in Agartala on October 8. They are marching against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The demonstration targets Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party calls his recent conduct undemocratic. TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha announced the protest on Wednesday.
Saha slammed the commission over the roll revision process. He claims it threatens voter eligibility. The party is acting under the national Save Democracy campaign. Rahul Gandhi leads this effort from the Lok Sabha. The protest begins at the Agartala Press Club and moves to the District Magistrate office of West Tripura. “We oppose this SIR. At the same time, we are protesting against the Chief Election Commissioner for his undemocratic and unconstitutional actions,” Saha said.
The movement started October 2 with a candlelight march in Agartala. Similar events occurred in Dharmanagar, Khowai, and Bishalgarh. This national push involves the INDIA bloc. Saha invited other opposition parties, NGOs, and the public to join the rally. A meeting at the All India Congress Committee on October 5 finalized the two-month schedule. Block-level protests start October 10. These efforts will also reach West Bengal.
