Guwahati: The Assam cabinet slashed the land premium to Re 1 for a four-bigha plot in the Palasbari Revenue Circle. This land will host a new boxing academy named after Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the decision on October 9. The facility sits near Guwahati.

Sarma wants to build the next generation of fighters. He hopes the gym provides top-tier training for young talent. The Chief Minister shared the news online shortly after the meeting. He stated: "In today's meeting of Assam Cabinet we cleared the decks for setting up a Lovlina Boxing Academy near Guwahati, so that the next gen of Assam's Lovlinas can get the best training and make the nation proud."

This move follows a string of accolades for Borgohain. She returned to Assam after winning gold in the women's 75kg category at the Asian Games in Japan. On October 2, she defeated China's Bao Ziyi 5-0 to take the title on her birthday. She is the second Indian woman to win Asian Games gold, following MC Mary Kom in 2014. The Tokyo bronze medalist also earned silver at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The state government recognized her success on October 6. Sarma presented her with a Rs 50 lakh cheque at Lok Sewa Bhawan. Crowds welcomed her at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Supporters and family members gathered to greet her. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Biswajit Daimary and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia attended the event. A Congress delegation, led by Pranati Phukan, also arrived to offer congratulations.
