Meghalaya government pays compensation to families of Tarapith fire victims

Shillong: Minister for Border Areas Development Brening A. Sangma delivered Rs 2 lakh in ex-gratia payments to the families of five Meghalaya residents killed in a hotel fire. The blaze struck near the Tarapith Temple in West Bengal's Birbhum district early Monday morning.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered the payouts. Officials distributed the funds Wednesday at the homes of the deceased in Dalu, West Garo Hills. Dalu Civil Sub-Division ADC A.G. Momin oversaw the process.

The fire claimed eight lives total. The five victims from Dalu include 45-year-old Rajendra Nath, 32-year-old Asha Nath, 45-year-old Buran Madak, 10-year-old Shivraj Madak, and 8-year-old Aushnath Madak. The state government issued the aid as a gesture of support and solidarity with the bereaved families.
