Meghalaya Assigns Specific Parking Zones for Assam Tourist Vehicles

Shillong: Meghalaya is moving to unclog Shillong streets. The government officially designated two parking sites for Assam-registered tourist vehicles to end the chaos of random parking near the Secretariat, Ward's Lake, and Pinewood Hotel. This change follows a formal request from Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora and a written plea from Assam-based taxi operators.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed the plan this Wednesday. Smaller taxis will now head to the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority parking complex on Keating Road. Meanwhile, the Shillong Regional Transport Government Terminal in Polo will house 10 to 20 large buses. Officials specifically rejected a proposal to use the Police Bazar MUDA lot, citing insufficient room for large vehicles. Drivers must drop passengers at the Secretariat or Khyndailad before moving to their assigned spots.

Dhar emphasized that this order will help manage the flow of out-of-state traffic. “We received a request from Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora, who chairs the Committee on their side, and also a written representation from Assam tourist vehicle operators. Today we finalised the arrangement,” Dhar said.

The Inter-State Bus Terminal remains open to all vehicles. Dhar noted that tourists are still free to travel anywhere in the state, including Sohra and Dawki. Furthermore, the government is negotiating with the Adani Group to secure dedicated parking for Meghalaya taxis at Guwahati Airport. Construction at the airport must finish first. Dhar noted: “The work is not yet completed. Once the parking area is ready, they will earmark space for us.”
