Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated two new multi-level parking facilities on Wednesday. The projects, located in Mawkhar and Motphran, cost Rs 38.92 crore. They provide space for 200 vehicles. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar attended the ceremony. The facilities aim to tackle severe traffic congestion in the state capital.

The Motphran site is fully mechanised. The Mawkhar facility functions as an automated multi-level park. Officials developed both under the Shillong Smart City Mission. These sites sit near the busy Iewduh market. The government hopes these projects will ease gridlock. "If you want to stop somebody from parking somewhere, you have to give that person the option to park somewhere else," Sangma said.

The government spent 18 months assessing mobility. Drones and satellite imagery helped identify congestion hotspots. Sangma noted that the state is also offering financial aid of up to Rs 1 lakh to individuals or communities willing to build parking on their own land. The state will take a share of the resulting revenue. Proper management of these new sites remains a priority. Sangma urged departments to establish firm operational procedures.

Beyond parking, Sangma inaugurated the Higher Secondary Section of Pynthorumkhrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School. He also laid the foundation stone for a new school auditorium. He granted Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister's Special Development Fund for the build. He added another Rs 5 lakh for sports and musical equipment. The school dates back to 1897.

Sangma addressed health issues as well. He announced that the government will review key health concerns every six months. This move follows a workshop on anaemia. He emphasized that the state must reach beyond government schemes to impact village life. Finally, the Chief Minister called for public participation in the upcoming National Games. He noted the event is a major milestone for the state.
