Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma opened two new community hubs in Shillong on November 3. He inaugurated the renovated State Central Library and the House of Ryndia at the U Soso Tham Auditorium site. These projects aim to sharpen public knowledge access and build economic pipelines for local weavers and entrepreneurs.
The library now features modernized reading rooms, a dedicated children's zone, archives, and a specific Knowledge Corner built for students studying for competitive exams. The Union Ministry of Culture funded this overhaul through the National Mission of Libraries. Sangma touted the updated site, calling the library "a place of nostalgia and learning for generations."
The House of Ryndia functions as a showroom for indigenous textiles. It links self-help groups and weavers directly to broader commercial markets. During the State Level Living Heritage Arts and Craft Village Festival, held at the same venue for Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas, Sangma pushed for aggressive cultural preservation. He argued that "preserving our cultural heritage requires conscious efforts and sustained Government intervention."
The state government has identified 11 Arts and Craft Villages to keep traditional skills alive while generating steady income for artisans. The festival ceremony also paid tribute to past freedom fighters and residents who fought to maintain local arts and traditions.
