Guwahati: Digboi police arrested three women for the torture and murder of a woman over 50. The attack happened in Ultapool Ouguri Gaon on October 28. Investigators booked the suspects on Tuesday morning. The case reached the station as number 111/2026 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Assam Witch Hunting Act.

The victim faced brutal abuse from her own community and relatives. Witnesses claim the mob hung the woman and tried to set her on fire. She escaped briefly but attackers recaptured her. They tied her legs with a rope before killing her. Villagers cremated the body 20 minutes before officers arrived. This destroyed potential forensic evidence. Suspects initially lied to police. They claimed the victim died of a pressure stroke. No witnesses came forward at first. A police official stated: "The team eventually gathered material evidence and eyewitness accounts that helped investigators make progress in the case."

Police tracked leads to Makum and Dibrugarh to find the truth. Officers finally identified the suspects as 45-year-old Buri Chautal, 35-year-old Simla Majhi, and 48-year-old Anima Chautal. Inspector Pranjal Chetia led the team. Superintendent Himangshu Gohain supervised the operation. The Digboi Nagarik Committee praised the police for their persistence. Authorities expect more arrests as the investigation moves forward. They are currently mapping out roles for everyone involved in the killing.
