Guwahati: Assam police launched a double strike against drug trafficking networks this week. In Cachar district, officers and the Assam Rifles seized 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin. The haul carries an estimated street value of Rs 28 crore. Three suspects now sit in custody following the operation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests on Tuesday night. He remains aggressive on the issue. "The drug mafia continues to face the full force of the law in Assam. In a joint operation by Cachar Police and Assam Rifles, a major narcotics consignment of 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin worth Rs 28 crore has been seized," Sarma stated. Yaba, often called crazy medicine, combines caffeine and methamphetamine.
Separately, police at Jagun apprehended Natung Kamcha. He hails from Nampong in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Officers from Lekhapani and Jagun cornered him at the border. They found an Italy-made pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition in his possession. The team also secured four soap cases filled with suspected narcotics and two mobile phones.
Investigators believe Kamcha moved drugs into Assam multiple times before this arrest. They are probing his alleged past ties to the banned NSCN (IM) group. Officials want to know if he worked alone or for a larger syndicate. The origin of the pistol remains a primary focus for the investigative team. Authorities are actively working to dismantle these cross-border supply chains.
