Guwahati: Police in Assam arrested 33 people for running an organized fraud and extortion racket. The group targeted citizens waiting outside police stations and outposts in the Boko-Chhaygaon Co-District of Kamrup. Superintendendent of Police Jankishore Gogoi confirmed the operation followed a lengthy intelligence investigation into the network.
The dragnet hit multiple locations. Officers arrested 13 people at Nagarbera Police Station, 10 at Goroimari Police Station, and four at the Sonatoli Police Outpost. Other arrests include four people from Mandira Police Outpost and one person each from Chhaygaon and Samaria stations. The racket thrived by approaching distressed people before they spoke to real officers. They charged cash for fake services.
Authorities are now hunting for more associates. Investigators are currently scrubbing financial records for ties to the group. "Police are interrogating all 33 arrested persons and are conducting further investigations to identify additional petition writers, associates and other individuals allegedly connected with the network," officials stated. Police urge the public to bypass middlemen and deal only with authorized staff. Anyone cheated by these touts should contact senior officers immediately.
