Guwahati: Assam police launched a massive statewide crackdown targeting fraudsters and conmen, detaining nearly 300 suspects across 29 districts. The operation follows direct orders from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Raids continue as police investigate rising reports of scams involving fraudulent phone calls and messages.
Kokrajhar district recorded 20 detentions. These suspects were pulled from areas under four different stations: eight from Kokrajhar Sadar, seven from Gossaigaon, three from Bagribari, and two from Fakiragram. Other regions saw significant activity. Lakhimpur reported 15 detentions and Nagarbera recorded 13. Bongaigaon and Goroimari each held 10 people. Morigaon and Dhubri recorded seven detentions apiece, while five were held in Goalpara.
Guwahati police joined the sweep. Five people were detained by Garchuk police for alleged cheating in their area. Four individuals were apprehended in Bajali, Tamharhat, and Sonatoli. Sivasagar and Golaghat recorded two detentions each, while Chhaygaon reported one. Officials state that the operation is ongoing. Police are currently checking for links between the accused as investigations progress.
"The operation against suspected fraudsters and touts was continuing," officials said. Police confirmed they are reviewing pending cases of cheating and fraud to determine the full extent of the criminal networks operating across the state.
