Guwahati: Police arrested three women for the murder of a villager in Digboi, Assam. The victim died at Ultapul Auguri on November 1. Locals targeted the woman based on claims she practiced witchcraft. The killing highlights the persistent threat of superstition in the region.

Assam law strictly forbids these acts. The Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act of 2015 criminalizes such violence, yet these crimes continue. The accused remain in custody as authorities investigate the motive and the specific circumstances of the attack.

Accusations of black magic frequently spark social ostracization in this state. The violence stems from deep-seated fear and misinformation. Authorities emphasize that the recurrence of these events proves "the need for greater public awareness, community intervention and effective enforcement." Officials have not yet released the identities of the detained suspects as the probe moves forward.
