Guwahati: Pritam Thapa died on October 29. The 48-year-old succumbed to injuries at a private hospital in Dibrugarh nine days after a stabbing. The attack occurred October 20 during Maha Navami celebrations at No. 2 Ngkung Pathar near Pawai Forest Village. Digboi Police now hold a murder case against 56-year-old Karna Bahadur Rai.
The dispute started over a 500 rupee debt. Thapa confronted Rai, triggering a heated argument that turned violent. Rai pulled a knife and attacked. A local youth, Rupah Jadabdhara, tried to break up the fight but suffered a deep knife wound to his hand. Rai then stabbed Thapa in the abdomen.
Thapa received care at Margherita Civil Hospital, then Tata Hospital in Chabua, before moving to a private facility in Dibrugarh. Rai remains hospitalized in Dibrugarh as well. Inspector Pranjal Chetia confirmed the police response. He stated, "The prosecution would proceed under the relevant provisions of law."
The death leaves Thapa’s three children without a provider. Local leaders from the Gorkha Students’ Union and area residents met Thursday to demand the suspect’s family assist with the children’s welfare. Community members blamed gambling and drug use for the violence. They are pushing police to clear out the narcotics and alcohol abuse plaguing the area to keep the streets safe.
