Kohima: Nagaland farmers are backing seven new rice varieties developed by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region. The crops earned praise during field days in Jalukiekam and Shokhuvi on October 29. A total of 41 farmers attended the sessions to inspect the new seeds.
The lineup includes Hornbill Gold 308, Patkai Pearl 131, Sekrenyilha 138, Ahunakhi 395, Moatsutssok 189, Tokhutsok 171, and Aoleang Tahwan 295. These strains feature fast maturity rates, drought tolerance, and disease resistance. They also pack a bigger punch than local rice.
At Jalukiekam, growers showed high interest in Patkai Pearl 131. It boasts a 30 to 40 percent yield boost over existing crops. Early harvests mean growers can plant toria, broccoli, field pea, and potato immediately after. Dr. Harendra Verma told the crowd, "These could help increase productivity while allowing timely cultivation of subsequent crops."
Dr. C. Aochen met with the Shokhuvi group to explain the benefits of better land-use efficiency. Both villages committed to planting the new varieties next season. ICAR officials believe the move will diversify local systems and boost farmer income.
