Seven High-Yield Rice Varieties Outperform Local Strains in Nagaland

Kohima: Seven new rice varieties outperformed local strains by 35 to 45 percent during field trials in Chiechama village. Experts showcased the crops on October 16 at a demonstration held in the Chiephobozou Block of Kohima. The event involved 31 local farmers and was organized by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, KVK Kohima, and the State Department of Agriculture.

Hornbill Gold 308 led the results with a yield of 5.5 tonnes per hectare under natural farming conditions. Other tested varieties included Patkai Pearl 131, Sekrenyi Lha 138, Tokhvu Tssok 171, Moatsu Tsuk 189, Ahuna Khi 395, and Aoleang Tahwan 295. These crops mature early. This speed allows farmers to plant rabi crops like potato, onion, toria, and field pea sooner.

Dr. Harendra Verma, a scientist with the ICAR Research Complex, noted the varieties offer superior disease resistance and grain quality. He advised farmers to transplant seedlings at 18 to 22 days old. He also suggested using organic manures and biofertilisers to boost output. "The demonstrated varieties indicated a potential yield advantage of approximately 35-45 per cent over local varieties, highlighting opportunities to strengthen rice production in the region," the ICAR statement noted.

Dr. Martina Shitiri of KVK Kohima urged farmers to share seeds to spread the new varieties. The project aims to improve overall farm income and land use across the state. Officials and farmers reviewed the harvest and discussed future planting strategies. The program serves as a model for wider agricultural improvement in Nagaland.
