Kohima: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region in Nagaland showcased seven new rice varieties on Thursday. These crops specifically target the unique growing conditions of the state. Scientists and 56 local farmers from Sovima, Henvi, Chumoukedima Village, Dhansiripar, and Singrijan met to inspect demonstration plots during a Field Day event.
These varieties hit the market after nine years of work. Researchers evaluated nearly 990 breeding lines to find the 30 best candidates before selecting the final seven. They are bred to mature in 115 to 120 days. They offer a yield potential between 5 and 7 tonnes per hectare. Each variety resists common diseases, pests, and drought.
Dr. Harendra Verma explained why the team focused on these traits. The varieties were developed to address major challenges faced by rice farmers in Nagaland, including long crop duration, drought susceptibility, diseases and insect pests. Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, and ICAR led the demonstrations.
Dr. H. Kalita pushed for moving tech from labs to fields to raise farm profits. Moaienla Pongen, David Awomi, and Limanenla also spoke at the event. They urged growers to switch to these new seeds to increase income and production. The event finished with a vote of thanks from Dr. Verma as the state prepares to distribute the seeds to the broader farming community.
