Guwahati: A court in Rangia, Assam, handed down life sentences to six men for the 1995 murder of 80-year-old Maria Boro. The verdict follows a legal battle stretching nearly three decades. Boro died in Bordangerikuchi village near the Baihata Chariali Police Station after locals branded her a witch.
The attackers killed Boro and burned her body. The court identified the convicts as Soneswar Boro, Jungle Boro, Suraj Boro, Kandura Boro, Hareshwar Boro, and Dhanla Boro. These men faced trial for crimes rooted in superstition.
On Wednesday, the Additional Sessions and District Judge’s Court finalized the punishment. The judge sentenced the six men under Sections 147, 148, 149, 302, 448, and 201 of the Indian Penal Code. The ruling marks a definitive end to the long-pending case. It highlights the serious legal consequences of "killings carried out in the name of witchcraft and superstition."
