Guwahati: The Assam government formally granted one-and-a-half katha of land to the family of visually impaired cricketer Simu Das. The parcel provides a foundation for her family to build a permanent home in Nagaon district. They previously lived in a broken-down hut on borrowed land. Hardship defined their lives for years.
Simu hails from Kathiatoli Kachari village in the Barhampur constituency. Her father left before she was born. Her mother, Anju Das, raised two children with disabilities alone. Anju worked as a domestic help and later as a cook at the Central Bank of India branch in Kathiatoli to survive. Despite this, Simu rose to compete for India on the international stage. Her talent earned her the 2025 Assam Gaurav Award.
Former Nagaon District Commissioner Debashish Sharma started the land allotment process to help the family. Kampur Circle Officer Raji Hlinglenkim Shingchon oversaw the final handover to Anju Das. The government move serves as a formal recognition of the athlete's grit. As officials noted, the allotment honors "Simu's sporting achievements and the hardships faced by her family." This land gives them a path out of a makeshift structure after years of uncertainty.
