Guwahati: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar visited Guwahati on Wednesday to hand out new sports equipment to students. Topcem Cement organized the event at Hotel Kiranshree Grand to boost grassroots cricket across Assam. Ten schools received bats, pads, and balls to help young players sharpen their skills.
Gavaskar serves as the company brand ambassador. He joined Bajrang Lohia, director of Meghalaya Cements Ltd., and Dr. Anil Kapur, senior president of sales and marketing, to distribute the gear. Gavaskar praised the effort during the ceremony. He said, "It is great to see initiatives that support a cause that may help these children develop a professional career in cricket."
The equipment reached teams from Hajo SBSKR Higher Secondary School, PM Shri Damdama Higher Secondary School, Ramdia High Secondary School, and Dadara Higher Secondary School. Students from Bali Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Gobardhan Anchalik Higher Secondary School, and Pantan Higher Secondary School also received kits. Rounding out the list were Chhaygaon Higher Secondary School, Rohini Kumar Choudhury High School in Kukurmara, and Uparhali Higher Secondary School.
Dr. Kapur noted that proper tools build confidence and discipline. The project is part of a larger plan to support health and education in Northeast India. Officials also pushed for attendance at the upcoming Guwahati International Marathon. That race hits the streets on 7 February 2027.
