Guwahati: Guwahati is launching an international marathon to boost sports tourism. The event boasts a total prize purse of Rs 1.25 crore. It stands among the top road races in India. Registrations begin September 11, 2026, via the official event website.
Sunil Gavaskar threw his weight behind the project. He praised the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Gavaskar noted, "Running a unique power to bring people together across communities, cultures, and every walk of life." Badminton star PV Sindhu is the official brand ambassador.
Runners compete in five categories. These include the 42.195 km full marathon, 21.097 km half marathon, 10 km run, 5 km run, and a 1.5 km run. The course begins at Judges Field. It winds past Gauhati University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, and IIT Guwahati before finishing back at the starting point.
Kim Vivian of Australia measured the course. He holds Grade A certification from World Athletics. Richard Hunter from the UK serves as race director. Ian Ladbrooke manages international elite athletes. Sunita Godara, a former Asian Marathon Champion, coordinates Indian elite participants. Organizers expect 30 top global distance runners to join India's best for the full marathon. Guwahati plans to host this race annually.
