Shillong: Five people died and one person suffered injuries in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn on Monday. The violence erupted around 9 pm in the Bora Service area along GS Road. Police launched a search for the shooter immediately. They caught him within an hour.
City police commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said the carnage stemmed from a falling out over a lease agreement. Ghanakanta Gogoi had leased the property roughly a year ago. “The lessee of the hotel, Ghanakanta Gogoi carried out the shootout and he was arrested within an hour of the shootout,” Mahanta said.
The victims include four members of the owner's family and one person from the owners' home village. The wounded survivor is also from that village and remains under medical care in Guwahati. Authorities seized a .32 caliber licensed pistol from Gogoi, who is an Assam native. Investigators continue to question the suspect to piece together the events. They expect to have a full account of the crime by Tuesday.
