Guwahati Husband Surrenders After Wife Found Murdered and Mutilated

Guwahati: Ramanujan Goswami surrendered at the Hatigaon Police Station on Sunday, September 6, following the death of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar Goswami. Police arrested him immediately. Officers found Riya’s body inside their third-floor flat at Anjali Griha in the Basisthapur Bylane area of Guwahati.

The scene was gruesome. Investigators found Riya’s head severed and wrapped in a black polythene bag inside a refrigerator. Her fingers had also been cut. Forensic experts found a sharp weapon and several liquor bottles in the room. Bloodstains covered the area, and household items were scattered across the floor. Officials estimate the killing occurred 24 to 48 hours before the discovery.

Neighbours alerted authorities after noticing a foul smell. Others reported hearing loud arguments on Saturday, followed by the sound of a woman crying. According to residents, "only Ramanujan’s voice could be heard during the disturbance and he appeared frightened and distressed at the time."

Riya, a Noonmati resident who worked at an AC Market boutique in Fancy Bazar, had lost both parents and leaves behind a brother. She and Ramanujan, an Uber driver from Gauripur, had been married for six months. The apartment sits on land once owned by Ramanujan’s father, who received the unit after selling the property to a builder.

The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital is performing a post-mortem. The Criminal Investigation Department and local police teams are currently collecting evidence and fingerprint data. Detectives are now questioning Ramanujan to uncover a motive for the slaying.
