Kohima: The Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland (LMFN) is pushing back against a directive calling for Sunday shop closures and the shutdown of businesses run by non-Nagas. The forum addressed the October 23, 2026, press release from the Federal Republic Government of Nagaland. It now demands that officials clarify the legal standing of these proposed measures.
Fear is growing in the market. The forum stands with the Naga Council Dimapur, the Dimapur Municipal Council, and other local groups opposing the phased closures. Long-term residents worry about their futures. While the group respects Naga traditions and the Christian faith, it argues that these mandates jeopardize the livelihoods of families who have spent generations building the local economy.
Legal experts within the group point to Articles 14, 19(1)(g), 21, and 300A of the Indian Constitution, which protect equality, the right to trade, and property rights. Although Article 371A provides a unique framework for the state, the forum insists that any policy must avoid illegal discrimination. "The economy does not distinguish between Naga and non-Naga," the group stated. They warn that such threats to business ownership will only trigger an economic downturn.
The LMFN is calling for a sit-down meeting between indigenous groups, government authorities, and representatives of the affected communities. They want fair policies instead of sweeping closures. Officials must act now. The forum insists that all future decisions concerning trade must follow standard procedures and respect the humanitarian rights of every resident in the state.
