Guwahati: Ghanakanta Gogoi, 34, moved to judicial custody on November 3. The businessman finished his seven-day police remand. Officers did not request more time for questioning. The court ordered his incarceration following the October 26 shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati.

The dispute started over a five-year lease signed on September 10, 2025. Monthly rent was set at Rs 1.8 lakh. Friction grew after Gogoi renovated the hotel. Disagreements centered on property use and facility access. A meeting to fix these issues ended in violence.

Gogoi allegedly fired on six people. Five died. The victims included co-owners Helena Bharali, 58, and her brother Bhudev Bharali, 65. Helena's son Debarshi Kashyap, 39, daughter-in-law Rinika Kashyap, 30, and staffer Narayan Das, 48, also perished. Driver Satyendra Pathak survived the attack.

Police arrested Gogoi within an hour. They recovered a licensed .32-bore pistol. A six-member Special Investigation Team under Joint Commissioner Ankur Jain is working the case. They have secured the pistol's arms licence and questioned the suspect's wife, Junmoni Gogoi.

On November 2, detectives walked Gogoi through the hotel for a crime scene reconstruction. They used dummy bodies and a fake firearm to map the shots. Police are still checking forensic evidence and witness statements. As one investigator noted, the team is working "to establish the complete sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the shooting."
