Jiribam Students End School Lockdown After Teacher Posting

Imphal: Student organizations in Jiribam pulled the plug on their lockdown of Jiribam Higher Secondary School. The protest started October 28 to fight the transfer of a computer science teacher. Now, the Education (S) Department has stepped in with a fix. They shifted a teacher from elsewhere in the district to cover the gap on a temporary basis.

Groups involved in the protest included AMSU, MSF, DESAM, and KSA. Maibam Rohit Singh, General Secretary of the AMSU District Committee, confirmed the decision to reopen school doors. He noted the move protects the academic schedule for students preparing for upcoming COHSEM and BOSEM exams. It was a tactical retreat for the sake of the students.

The victory remains incomplete. Rohit demanded a permanent lecturer soon. He warned that teachers filling the Jiribam district quota must stay put to keep local schools running. "The academic interests of students must remain the foremost priority," he said. He added that officials must stop playing politics with the education sector.
