Shillong: Meghalaya honored Zubeen Garg on Saturday. The Assamese Community of Greater Shillong observed the first Zubeen Divas at the Deba Kumar Das Memorial Hall in Lumshatsngi. Crowds gathered for prayers, floral tributes, and music. The event kicked off with Shraddhanjali and a Diha Naam.
Attendees performed a Mayabini tribute to the late artist. South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai paid his respects alongside the community. Shullai spoke on Garg’s impact. He said, "Garg was born in Tura and his contribution extended far beyond music." He described the icon as a symbol of cultural pride who inspired millions.
Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim attended the event to emphasize the values of unity and togetherness. Organizers held a singing competition for three age brackets: 5 to 10 years, 11 to 17 years, and 18 years and above. The day finished with a cultural evening.
Separately, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya held a remembrance at Gyan Circle on September 19. Around 6,000 students joined faculty and administrators for the ceremony. Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariah, and Prof. Dr. A.C. Kataki led the floral tribute. The USTM family also presented their own Mayabini performance.
Hoque highlighted a deep connection between the school and the performer. The university awarded Garg an Honorary Doctor of Letters on August 27, 2024. They cited his work in peace, harmony, and social development. The USTM Cultural Forum closed the day by celebrating a legacy that bridged gaps across the Northeast.
