Shillong: The Meghalaya unit of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation gathered in Shillong on Saturday to mark two milestones. Attendees honored the 11th Remembrance Day of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the first death anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg. The program took place at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture Auditorium.
Proceedings opened with the traditional lighting of a lamp. Guests followed with floral tributes to the late President and the singer. Air Marshal Devendra P. Hirani, the Senior Air Staff Officer at Eastern Air Command, headlined the event. He challenged the local youth to pursue education and responsible leadership.
Hirani shared a memory from two decades ago at Air Force Station Pune. He watched Dr. Kalam prepare to fly a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft. Hirani described the moment clearly. "Kalam’s enthusiasm on the occasion had left a lasting impression on him," he noted. The former President viewed the flight as a dream come true.
The Air Marshal warned against the modern trap of instant gratification on platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. He urged attendees to value patience over quick responses. True leadership, he argued, requires composure and the capacity to listen. Phalguni Chakraborty also unveiled a new book titled Naman during the ceremony. The event closed with a call for students to build a stronger India.
