Guwahati: Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University held the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Annual Lecture on Wednesday. The event took place at the Khanapara City Campus in Guwahati. Artist Loknath Goswami took the stage to discuss the people’s cultural movement of the 1980s. The Bhupen Hazarika School of Mass Communication hosted the session.

Goswami leaned on his own history to explain how Assam’s cultural shift evolved during that decade. He noted that Hazarika used music to mirror the socio-political grit of the era. Songs and performances turned into tools for public awareness and unity. Goswami told the crowd, "The people’s cultural movement of the 1980s and Bhupen Hazarika" defined an era of collective expression.

The speaker shared stories of his private time with Hazarika and fellow artists. He even performed some of the legend’s most famous tracks. Jayanta Kumar Sarma, Director of the school, opened the event. He described Hazarika as a humanist and a cultural ambassador for the Assamese people. The man’s work captured the identity and struggles of the region.

Registrar Pranab Saikia closed the proceedings. He pushed for more academic talk to keep the state’s heritage alive. A packed auditorium held faculty, students, and research scholars who turned out for the talk.
