Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet gave the green light for a 45-year land lease in Mawkhanu on Tuesday. Northeast United FC will take control of 19.99 acres in New Shillong to build a state-of-the-art football academy. This project requires an investment of Rs 40 to 50 crore. It aims to bridge the gap between grassroots programs and professional play.
The facility plans include three football grounds plus housing for young athletes. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared the news online. His government already promotes talent through Mission Football. They want to prepare local players for top-tier competition.
Cabinet members also signed off on buying 281,000 square feet of paddy fields at Mawkhanu to grow Knowledge City. The government will pay Rs 490 per square foot. This land deal will cost about Rs 13.78 crore. The move secures small plots sitting between existing state-owned parcels.
Health Minister and MDA-II spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said, "These gaps were viewed as an obstacle to planned development." Closing these gaps ensures better connectivity and efficient use of the New Shillong Township site. Officials did not disclose details regarding specific landowners or the official timeline for the acquisition.
