Shillong: Meghalaya wants a Rs 1.35 lakh crore economy by 2032. Speaker Thomas A. Sangma announced the goal at Jowai’s 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The roadmap leans on Mission 10 and Vision 2032. The economy doubled since 2018. Now the state needs better roads and more jobs.
Big infrastructure projects drive this push. The Dhubri-Phulbari bridge will slash travel distance from 212 kilometres to 20 kilometres. The government is also banking on the Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor and NH-127B. A Rs 2,462-crore World Bank project aims to boost trade links. New Shillong acts as a central hub for the state’s future. It will host a new secretariat, Unity Mall, and tech infrastructure.
Economic growth requires more workers. Programs like PRIME and CM-ELEVATE support local enterprise. More than 63,000 youth have undergone training. Farming remains the backbone of the rural sector. CM FARM plus the Floriculture, Mushroom, and Jackfruit Missions assist 25,000 farmers. Fish production hit 4,000 metric tonnes in 2025-26.
Tourism is expanding alongside culture. The Meghalaya Homestay Mission wants 3,000 units ready by 2028. The Grassroots Music Programme pays local performers. Educational gains are also clear. The SSLC pass rate hit 97.2 per cent while HSSLC reached 86.6 per cent. A new pay framework covers 23,000 teachers as of April 1, 2026.
Governance reforms show results. CM Connect handled over one lakh citizen queries since 2024. State tax collections reached Rs 2,844 crore for 2025-26. Aadhaar coverage stands at 88 per cent. Sports also take center stage. Meghalaya hosts the 39th National Games in 2027 with 10,000 athletes expected in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai. Sangma noted, "Meghalaya’s development must remain rooted in its indigenous identity while creating wider opportunities for youth, women, farmers and entrepreneurs and contributing to the broader vision of Viksit Bharat." The state already started direct hiring for athletes, with canoeist Pynshngain Kurbah becoming the first recipient.
