Motorcyclist critical as NH-27 safety fears mount in Assam

Guwahati: A motorcyclist remains in critical condition after a collision on Friday, September 4, on National Highway-27 near Khaloibari village in Assam. Indramohan Goswami was riding his motorcycle, registration AS 01 D 0360, when a car with registration AS 12 H 1074 struck him. Khetri traffic police arrived at the scene and rushed the victim to a medical facility for urgent care.

This wreck follows a deadly incident on August 30 at Nalgadera, where seven people died after a passenger vehicle hit a massive pothole. The driver lost control, crossed the divider, and slammed into an oncoming truck. Four victims died on the spot. Local organizations in the Dimoria area filed an FIR against the National Highways Authority of India on September 4, blaming poor maintenance for the carnage. They want a full investigation into NHAI officials and the road contractor. They are demanding compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh for each injured person.

The public outcry is growing. Residents blocked the highway after the August 30 crash to demand immediate fixes. An emergency meeting held on August 31 promised repairs within seven days, but the situation remains grim. Locals claim three to four accidents now occur on this stretch every single day. One resident group stated they are holding "NHAI’s alleged road construction and maintenance practices responsible for the accident." Despite detaining two NHAI officials previously, the road remains a death trap for commuters.
