Shillong: The North Eastern Council finished development projects totaling Rs 28.08 crore across Meghalaya during July and August 2026. Officials also released an additional Rs 7.86 crore for ongoing work. These efforts target education, health, entrepreneurship, and tourism.
A major win for Garo Hills is the new 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital. The project cost Rs 6.69 crore. It provides advanced local diagnostics. Patients no longer need to travel far for imaging.
Ri-Bhoi district saw the finish of a Rs 2.94-crore community program for Tiwa (Lalung) residents on July 6. The work protects spring-water catchments and forest biodiversity. Education funding also hit hard. The council sent Rs 4.90 crore to eight Ramakrishna Mission schools, including sites in Laidiengsai, Nongkynrih, and Mawrah. Work wrapped up at six other mission schools in areas like Jalapet and Mylliem for Rs 13.14 crore.
Entrepreneurship and tourism got a boost too. The council put Rs 2.50 crore toward an Integrated Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Centre. Another Rs 1.17 crore upgraded seven PRIME HUBS for local startups. Tourism infrastructure in Laitlynkot received Rs 46.50 lakh. A water hyacinth craft cluster opened on August 25 at a cost of Rs 3.69 crore. The project features design, innovation, and training workshops.
Beyond state lines, the NEC sent Rs 16.22 crore to regional institutions. These funds support IIM Shillong Hindi courses and youth placements in Japan. The council noted these initiatives cover a wide reach. As the NEC stated, "The projects include overseas placement programmes in Japan for youth from the Northeast."
