Shillong: The North Eastern Council dropped over 13.58 crore into Meghalaya throughout May and June 2026. This cash targets healthcare, education, renewable energy, and community infrastructure. Money is flowing into Garo Hills where Tura Civil Hospital will install a 1.5 Tesla MRI system to boost local diagnostic services.
Technical education gets a lift too. The council sanctioned funds for Shillong Polytechnic and a new NERCORMS training center. Cultural sites are not left out. The Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and Seinraij Jowai Community Hall received support for their ongoing community work. Traders at Iewduh Market will also see better facilities as upgrades take hold at the major hub.
Energy projects are in the works. The council is backing surveys for the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II, and Selim hydroelectric plants. Officials claim these studies pave the way for future power needs. In June 2026, workers finished the NEC-funded Shillong-Umroi Airport Road project. The council called the road upgrade "a significant step towards improving airport access while boosting tourism, trade and regional connectivity."
Regional institutions received another 18.93 crore during that same window. This budget helped NIT Meghalaya run their Industry Academia Research Conclave 2025. It also covered the Miss & Mister Beauty Pageant 2026 held at NEIGRIHMS in Shillong. Universities, NGOs, and various societies rounded out the list of recipients for these grants.
