Shillong: Meghalaya is expanding its footprint in Maharashtra. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently laid the foundation stone for a new state house in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The project spans 2,071.67 square metres of land provided by the City and Industrial Development Corporation.

Demand is high. The existing facility at Vashi has operated since 2008 with only 12 rooms. It frequently struggles to house patients heading to Tata Memorial Hospital, alongside students, entrepreneurs, and tourists. This new site sits in a booming area for technology and data centres.

Securing space in the crowded Mumbai region was a major hurdle. "For us as a State of Meghalaya, today almost feels like a dream," Sangma said during the ceremony. He credited the Maharashtra government and local representatives for helping the project move forward.

Fadnavis noted the deep ties between the states. He emphasized that Mumbai and Pune serve as critical hubs for professionals and artists from the Northeast. The new facility aims to bolster these cultural and economic links.

Meghalaya Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed called the project a result of sustained cooperation. Cyril V. D. Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary of the General Administration Department, added that the facility would serve as a base for the state's growing engagement with Maharashtra.

The event included a performance by the Khmih Creative Society, showcasing music from Meghalaya. Officials in attendance included Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Sosthen K. Sohtun, Milind Deora, Nitin Patil, Aniket Tatkare, Vikrant Patil, Prashant Thakur, Mahendra Thorve, Mahesh Baldi, and Manda Mhatre.
