North Eastern Council Pumps 13.58 Crore into Meghalaya Infrastructure

Shillong: The North Eastern Council handed out more than Rs 13.58 crore between May and June 2026 to overhaul Meghalaya infrastructure. Cash flows into healthcare, education, energy, and cultural preservation. The move aims to stabilize regional development. Tura Civil Hospital gets a 1.5 Tesla MRI system to serve the Garo Hills.

Technical education gets a boost as well. Funds go toward Shillong Polytechnic and a new NERCORMS training-cum-resource centre. Community spaces are not left behind. The Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and Seinraij Jowai Community Hall secured support. Meanwhile, workers are upgrading the Iewduh Market to help traders and farmers.

Energy projects are on the clock. The council cleared money for surveys at the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II, and Selim hydroelectric sites. These studies decide future feasibility for renewable power. NEC officials also confirmed that they wrapped up the Shillong-Umroi Airport Road project in June 2026. The council says it is a "significant step towards improving airport access while boosting tourism, trade and regional connectivity."

The council spread another Rs 18.93 crore across the Northeast. Universities and NGOs grabbed these funds for various events. NIT Meghalaya used the cash for its Industry Academia Research Conclave 2025. NEIGRIHMS hosted the Miss & Mister Beauty Pageant 2026 with NEC backing.
