Agartala: Tripura will restart its only hydroelectric power project this December. The Gumti facility in Gomati district has sat idle since 2024 flood waters wrecked the site. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed the 100 crore restoration plan on October 9.
Officials spent months running technical feasibility studies. Teams from NIT Agartala, IIT Guwahati, NHPC, and BHEL inspected the site. The minister noted the scope of these professional assessments. "We have got surveys carried out by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to explore the feasibility of its revival," Nath said.
The plant currently sits broken. The upgrade will change everything. Once crews finish the repairs, the facility will pump out 10 to 11 MW of power each day. This is a massive jump from the original 2.5 MW capacity. Workers established the dam at Tirthamuk 56 years ago by blocking the Raima and Sarma hill streams.
The reservoir draws tourists by the busload. Beyond power generation, the government wants to lock in safety for people living downstream. Nath thanked the National Dam Safety Authority for hosting an awareness drive at Tirthamuk. The state expects the project to secure the local power grid while keeping the aging infrastructure stable.
