Agartala: Tripura officials launched a five-year roadmap to make the state self-sufficient in milk, meat, and eggs. Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das announced the plan in the Legislative Assembly on August 28. The state aims to boost rural incomes, create jobs for unemployed youth, and support women in the workforce.
The state currently ranks second in the Northeast for per-capita milk availability. Officials are focusing on artificial insemination, calf nutrition, and improved veterinary care to close the gap. They are also backing high-yielding dairy breeds and modernizing milk-processing facilities. Cattle insurance now provides financial security for farmers.
Tripura is already self-sufficient in meat and holds the second-highest per-capita ranking in the region. To build on this, the government plans to increase pig and goat distribution while expanding artificial insemination. A World Bank-funded project is currently active, and veterinary teams now visit farms directly to provide treatment and ensure hygienic production.
The state currently leads the Northeast in per-capita egg production. The government is upgrading farms, building brooder houses, and distributing improved duck and poultry breeds. "Financial assistance through banks is also being facilitated to encourage the establishment of large-scale private commercial poultry farms," Das said. Officials expect these initiatives to eventually create export opportunities for egg products while hardening the state's food security.
