Tripura Dispatches 23 Tonnes of Tea to Major Markets

Agartala: Tripura shipped 23.31 metric tonnes of high-quality tea to Kolkata and Guwahati. This move aims to revive the state tea industry. The cargo left the Durgabari Central Tea Processing Factory in Bamutia. Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, flagged off the shipment alongside other officials at the Durgabari Tea Garden.

Kolkata received 15.31 metric tonnes while 8 metric tonnes headed to Guwahati. Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited, noted the state manages five gardens. Three of these sites produce roughly 9 lakh kg of tea every year.

Financial health is improving. Ghosh said, "The corporation currently has five tea gardens, of which three collectively produce around 9 lakh kg of tea annually." Previously, production costs often eclipsed sale prices. Prices have jumped from the old range of ₹70 to ₹100 per kg to about ₹200 per kg today. Better oversight and strict quality standards drove this recovery.

The state government now prioritizes the sector. Officials pointed to better socio-economic conditions for laborers. Workers receive 22 distinct facilities and now earn a daily wage of ₹204. The government also issued land pattas to support these families.

Planners want a local auction house. This would create jobs for producers, workers, and traders inside the state. Tripura hopes this regional expansion strengthens its long-term market footprint.
