Agartala: Tripura prepares to launch its first live tea auction in Agartala this September. The move aims to connect local producers with a national network of buyers. TTDCL Chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh confirmed that site preparations at the former Industries Department facility in Gurkhabasti are now complete. The state government backed the plan following approval from NITI Aayog.
Interest is building. Buyers and producers from Assam and West Bengal are already eyeing the new hub. Ghosh held introductory meetings in Kolkata on July 31 and Guwahati on August 6 to build momentum. Around 53 buyers from the Kolkata tea auction sector attended the first meeting. Guwahati officials have even provided hands-on training to Tripura stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the pan-India auction system mandated by the Tea Board of India.
Ghosh noted that the auction center will run just like the established systems in Guwahati and Kolkata. He expects this to jumpstart an industry that sat underdeveloped for years. "We are hopeful that next month, in September, we will be able to successfully conduct a live auction at the proposed auction centre in Agartala," Ghosh said. Expert teams from Guwahati will travel to Tripura to guide the initial operations.
Economic confidence is rising. The state has secured signed agreements for investments totaling Rs 831 crore. Ghosh credits this inflow to a stable business environment. He pointed to the local law and order as a primary reason investors are finally giving the state a hard look.
