Guwahati: Residents gathered at the Sri Sri Nepali Bishnu Mandir auditorium in Digboi on Thursday to mark the 35th Language Recognition Day. The event focused on the release of the Madhyamik Nepali Shabdakosh. This secondary dictionary comes from the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and carries edits by Sahitya Akademi Award winner Yuddhabir Rana.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang first launched the book on July 13 during the 212th Bhanu Jayanti celebrations. He noted its importance for regional identity. Tamang said, "The inclusion of Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution as important for the language, culture and identity of the Nepali-speaking community."
Tikaram Chhetri, a national award-winning teacher, unveiled the dictionary in Digboi. The ceremony also saw the release of Sangharshka Goretabaru, a memoir by Ratna Bahadur Chhetri. The Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and the Sri Sri Nepali Bishnu Mandir Samity managed the joint event.
Dignitaries included Lokanath Newar, Jun Pradhan, Thaneshwar Sharma, Hiralal Sharma, Madan Gurung, and Narayan Jaishy. Performances of traditional dance and song rounded out the day. Organizers urged younger generations to protect their language.
