Guwahati: Swadesh Swabhiman reached a major milestone on August 1. The initiative held its twenty-fifth edition at the Sangeetacharya Lakshmiram Barooah Sadan in Guwahati. The group marked the event by releasing a commemorative volume, solidifying years of research and debate into a permanent record.
Kuladhar Saikia started the project while serving as president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha. He wanted a space to foster deep thinking rather than just another public speaking drill. It focuses on the Axom Kotha Got, a collective of young people who run the project themselves. They handle the organizing, coordination, and decision-making duties.
The format remains strict. Speakers get five minutes to present their research and arguments before facing questions from the audience. This pressure tests their preparation. It forces them to move beyond memorized scripts to genuine understanding. The program has expanded well beyond its local roots, hosting events in Shillong and New Delhi.
The topics vary wildly, covering everything from Assam's history and literature to its economy and environment. These sessions provide a space where participants can navigate difficult societal questions. As the original text notes, "There is something deceptively simple about the format of Swadesh Swabhiman."
Organizers emphasize that the project is not just about the microphone. It teaches democratic participation and negotiation skills. By removing rigid hierarchies, the group allows students to build the platform alongside established intellectuals. This approach builds confidence and intellectual agility that lasts well beyond their time on stage.
