Guwahati: Members of the Karbi Students Association and local residents marched through Bordeka village on August 21. They directed their anger at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. The crowd moved from the Karbi Anglong district toward Kuthori in Kaliabor to voice opposition to remarks Gogoi made regarding the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga National Park. The government wants to shrink this zone from 10 kilometers down to 1 kilometer.
Protesters argue this change threatens families who have lived on the land for generations. They claim their ancestors acted as the park’s primary guardians against outside threats. One protester stated, "We cannot give even an inch of land where our people are living." The group insists that officials must prioritize the rights of local residents over political maneuvering.
The rally participants explicitly warned Gogoi to stop playing politics with their homes. They demanded that he focus on securing their legal land rights instead. Tension remains high as the group threatens further agitation if their demands go ignored. The protesters named Gogoi, Ratan Engti, and Mira Borthakur as individuals who must answer for the current situation. The debate follows recent Supreme Court directions and official state announcements regarding protected territory.
