Assam Villagers Protest Plan to Relocate 334 Laika Families

Guwahati: Hundreds of residents from six villages filled the streets of Jagun on Tuesday, July 14. They marched to the National Highway and gathered at the Patkai Gate. The crowd aimed to stop the state government from moving 334 families from Laika into the nearby Tirap Reserved Forest area. This relocation site sits near Phaneng-Kenia.

The Greater Phaneng-Kenia Balijan Land Protection Committee organized the protest. Men and women shouted slogans against the plan throughout the day. They claim this move hurts the local population. Protesters want the state to pull the proposal immediately. The government originally displaced these 334 families from the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, leaving them in difficult conditions for years.

Locals say the government must listen to them. They want officials to consult stakeholders before taking any further action. The group issued a blunt warning to authorities regarding the standoff. "The agitation would be intensified if their demands were not addressed," the committee stated. This protest follows a long string of complaints from residents who refuse to accept the state's chosen relocation zone.
