Dhubri Eviction Victims Still Await Homes Year After Adani Project Push

Guwahati: One year has passed since the government cleared 3,500 bighas of land in Charuwa Bakra. Officials targeted the area for an Adani Group power project. Now, hundreds of families remain in limbo. They live in makeshift shelters alongside their livestock and children.

Data from the Dhubri unit of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti shows 2,000 families lost their homes. This includes 300 patta-holder families who held 1,148 bighas of land, 200 families with allotted plots, and 600 landless families. Authorities promised the patta holders land-for-land swaps through signed bonds. Not one of these families has received alternative land. Others faced relocation to a riverine char on the Brahmaputra, but residents call the site unsuitable for permanent living.

Families also report that the eviction destroyed local graveyards. This has fueled deep resentment in the community. Nazimul Haque, the local Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti president, slammed the lack of progress. "It has been one year since the eviction, but the displaced families are still waiting for proper rehabilitation," Haque said. He noted that residents lost their homes, farm land, and core income sources.

Displaced people are now demanding that the administration find safe, viable land for permanent settlement. They remain exposed to harsh weather and have lost their primary means of survival. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti warns of fresh protests if the government does not act soon. The Dhubri district administration has not yet provided a response regarding the status of these families.
