Guwahati: Former Haflong MLA and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council chief Samarjit Haflongbar wants Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to clear illegal squatters from Hojai. The target is the Bordolong Lanka Bhetapara Tribal Belt and Block. This area sits under Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886. It dates back to February 1, 1950.

The protected zone spans 52,176 bighas. It exists to secure land rights for indigenous people, specifically the Dimasa community. Haflongbar claims outsiders hold land here illegally. These encroachments push genuine tribal families off their ancestral soil. The former legislator insists the government apply the same eviction standards used elsewhere in the state to this specific belt.

Haflongbar filed a formal representation demanding a full survey by the Revenue Department and Hojai district administration. He wants officials to identify illegal holdings, start legal eviction proceedings, and return the ground to tribal beneficiaries. He rejects the idea that this is a targeted attack on any specific group. "All citizens must adhere to the legal provisions governing Tribal Belts and Blocks and that illegal occupation of protected tribal land should not be allowed to continue," he stated.

He expects the state to act fast. Restoring this area will preserve the sanctity of the original 1950 mandate. The goal remains simple: enforce the law to protect indigenous legal rights.
