Guwahati: The Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court cleared Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi of all charges linked to the 2016 Kaziranga National Park eviction drive. He walked free. Authorities originally charged Gogoi with obstructing government workers during the controversial clearing of the park.
Three separate legal battles occupied the court docket for the legislator. Officials eventually merged two of those files into a single trial. Following his successful defense in the first matter, the judge tossed out PRC Case No. 181/22 as well.
Advocate Hashim Uddin Ahmed managed the defense. Ahmed pushed back hard against the state. The legal proceedings grew out of widespread unrest after state officials launched the displacement operation. As the defense put it, the acquittal comes "in connection with the cases stemming from protests and opposition to the eviction drive in Kaziranga in 2016."
